COVID-19 has highlighted the possibility and importance of strengthening the immune system with nutrition, particularly of importance in the high-risk group of the elderly.

Less attention has been focused on malnutrition, a widespread and underlying problem in groups at risk. It is critical to ensure an adequate intake of protein and energy in addition to vitamins, trace elements, and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA to prevent malnutrition and to support the immune system.
