A Smartfish drink fortified with B vitamin is an effective intervention strategy for improving B vitamin status among older adults


Heffernan and colleagues have published the results from their OptiAge food intervention study demonstrating improvements in all B vitamin biomarkers among participants who received the B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink compared to the participants who received the placebo. The researchers concluded that the B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink is a useful intervention strategy for improving B vitamin status in older adults.

A high proportion of older adults are reported to have sub-optimal B vitamin status resulting in the necessity of developing new nutritional strategies, including novel foods, targeted towards the elderly. This multicenter double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted at the University College Dublin and Ulster University with the aim to develop and investigate the effectiveness of a B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink in improving B vitamin biomarkers in older adults.

The fortified drinks were manufactured to contain 200 µg folic acid, 10 µg vitamin B12, 10 mg vitamin B6 and 5 mg riboflavin in the active version, while the placebo was an identical, isocaloric formulation which did not contain B vitamins. Both the intervention and the placebo drinks contained 10 µg vitamin D. Participants were randomly assigned to consume either the B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink or the placebo for 16 weeks.  

A total of 70 participants (>50 years old) completed the study in which 37 received the Smartfish drink and 33 received the placebo. Compliance was high among the participants, with >90% compliance in 59 participants, 80-90% compliance in 7 participants, and <80% compliance in only one participant. Furthermore, significant improvements in all B vitamin biomarkers including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and riboflavin were found in the active group compared to placebo group. Additionally, maintenance of vitamin D status was achieved for participants in both groups during the winter months with the daily consumption of 10 µg of vitamin D present in the drinks. The high compliance, the maintenance of vitamin D status, and the increase in B vitamin biomarkers demonstrate that a B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink is well accepted by older adults and is effective in maintaining vitamin D status and optimizing vitamin B status in the target group.

Fortified drinks such as this B vitamin fortified Smartfish drink enable the administration of nutrition including vitamins in a highly accepted format resulting in the high compliance depicted in this study. The high compliance and the observed increase in B-vitamin biomarkers are highly encouraging and serve as a strong basis for further research in this area, says Geir Harstad, CEO of Smartfish.
